This is a comprehensive book on CorelDraw 8 for Windows and Macintosh users and covers just about anything you want to know about the program: from the most rudimentary to the most sophisticated features. It includes step-by-step instruction, a thorough discussion of each feature and technique, large screen shots, and a full-color insert, which displays artwork by many contributors and a brief mention of how the artists undertook their projects. You can get more tips, techniques, and information from the authors' Web site: http://www.unleash.com

New CorelDraw users, as well as those already already familiar with the program, will find significant value in this book, and should benefit from the in-depth knowledge these authors have developed from their experience with the program.

The book is divided into six basic categories or parts: basics; manipulation; adding effects; input and output; advanced topics; and appendices.

Part 1: The Basics--the authors help you install the software; learn the new features in this version; study the interface elements, such as menus and toolbars; draw basic shapes and lines; create text; transform objects and shape them using the Shape, Knife, and Eraser tools; and apply colors and use color models and palettes.

Part 2: Manipulation--lets you delve into layers and the Object Manager; use grids, guidelines, and rulers; manage objects using the Combine, Break Apart, Weld, and Trim commands; and align and distribute objects.

Part 3: Adding Effects--learn to work with special effects features such as the Enveloping tool, Interactive Distortion Tool, and the perspective feature. Other effects discussed are: extrusion, lighting, beveling, blending, contouring, lens, transparency, and color adjustments. Finally, you learn how to fit text to a path.

Part 4: Input and Output--inputting and outputting your artwork is covered. The authors explain the Color Profile Wizard, the CorelSCAN utility, importing and exporting features, page setup features, and printing your work and preparing it for a service bureau.

Part 5: Advanced Topics--discusses the spelling and grammar checkers and other writing tools; using the text-extracting and merging features, styles and templates, and the find-and-replace tool. You also learn to create bar codes, object databases, and custom patterns and symbols; use the font-management tools; produce Web images and pages; and customize and automate the CorelDraw interface.

Part 6: Appendices--covers third-party resources (which can be found on http://www.unleash.com); production notes, and author biographies.

This book is a great addition to anyone's reference library. It is not one of those quickie short books like the Sams Teach Yourself in 10 Minutes books. It is a solid and thorough 958 page reference book that you can use as a guide to the program. You can use it to learn the program or peruse it when you want to review specific features. It is not the full-color glossy page type of book either, as it is mostly done in black and white, except for the color inserts. Yet there is a level of detail and clarity that would help even the most novice CorelDraw user. So I do recommend it for anyone interested in CorelDraw.
